BeBe is our beautiful silver and white female Shih Tzu. We just recently bred her to our Tweek and she had only one puppy on Dec 26th, 2009. She went into labor around midnight and was in labor for two hours with active pushing and still didn't produce her puppy. I had taken her to the vet two days prior to her due date to have an x-ray so we knew there was only one puppy. After talking with some friends on the phone very late that night I decided to take her to our local emergency clinic. When I got her there they gave her medication to make her contractions a little more aggressive hoping she could have the puppy on her own. After giving her another 45 minutes the vet stated she needed to have a c-section. At that moment I was not real concerned as c-sections are a very common procedure with minimal risk. I understood that the risk of mortality to the puppy increased, as it does with any type of anesthisia. What I did not expect was the serious complications that my BeBe would have due to this c-section! The vet took her back and began the procedure. After only a short while, they brought this beautiful black male puppy to me that was very healthy and very strong! They then updated me on BeBe and said she was doing really well at that point. After an hour the vet brought her back into a different area where I could see her. He stated to me that she was loosing too much blood. After he sewed her up, she began to bleed profusely and needed to have a blood transfusion. Here my poor little girl was laying there limp, her tongue and gums were white, and her eyes actually glazed over. The vet gave her less than a 20% chance to survive through this. During her transfusion she had a bad reaction to the blood and they had to stop the treatment. Her eyes, mouth, and nose swelled up and her breathing became very labored. They then proceeded to give her more medication to try to help counteract her reaction. By this time it was 8:00am and the emergency vet was closing. We then transported her to our local vet where they evaluated her all day. The bleeding finally stopped and she was able to come home with me. We kept her quiet for several days and gave her the medication she needed. Back to the vet three different times she went to be rechecked. We took care of her puppy for her as the vet was worried the puppy would drain her even more. We cooked her a special diet high in iron to help restore her blood and fed her every couple hours. We kept her hydrated and was by her side the whole time. She is now two weeks past what happened to her and she is doing wonderfully! She is able to tend to her puppy and has become a wonderful mommy! As soon as she is well enough to go through another procedure, we are having her spayed. We do not feel it would be fair to breed her again. We almost lost her this first time and it just isn't a chance we are willing to take with her ever again. So she is now retired and will live here with us for the rest of her life!
I just wanted to share her story with others. A procedure that is done all the time normally without any complications can turn into a nightmare in an instant! We truly feel we now have a miracle girl, she beat the odds and we thank God each and every day she made it through! Our little survivor girl! So always be prepared, that anything can happen even in the most unlikely situation...it can as it did to BeBe!
